The most modern way to connect these technologies is throughPhotoelectrochemical (PEC) Water Splitting.
- The Concept: Instead of using solar panels to make electricity and then using
that electricity in a separate machine (Electrolyzer), PEC uses specialized
materials that absorb sunlight and split water molecules directly on the surface
of the panel. - Solid Oxide Electrolyzers (SOE): A major breakthrough for 2025 is the market
entry of SOE technology. These operate at much higher temperatures than
older models, reaching over 80% efficiency. They are perfect for industrial sites
where “waste heat” from other processes can be reused to make hydrogen
production cheaper.
