Because solar power is inconsistent, we need a place to put the extra Hydrogen.
- Salt Caverns: Scientists are now using massive underground salt domes as storage tanks. Salt is naturally “gas-tight,” meaning the tiny hydrogen molecules can’t leak out.
- The Cycle Challenge: Research is currently focused on “Cycling”—how the pressure changes in these caverns when we pump hydrogen in and out daily. This is key to making hydrogen a reliable backup for the entire power grid.
